• MSA1510i redundant controller and redundant Ethernet iSCSI I/O module (optional—for
multipath con
fi
gurations)
• Hard drive storage enclosures (MSA20 SATA, MSA30 SCSI, or other supported models)
• Hard drives
•
Con
fi
rm that the hardware and software components you plan to use are supported for use with
the MSA1510i. Before initially installing your MSA and before making any con
fi
guration changes,
check the MSA1510i Compatibility guide, available on the MSA1510i website.
•
Record information about your system on provided checklists and worksheets. This information
is needed when con
fi
guring the storage, entering connection information, and setting up
multipathing; it is also needed for future con
fi
guration changes, reference, and troubleshooting
purposes. Use the checklist on the poster or in the back of this guide.
•
Consider reading the
HP SAN design guide
. This guide contains useful information about
setting up and managing iSCSI and Fibre Channel networks and is available on the HP SAN
infrastructure website:
http://www.hp.com/go/san
.
•
Frequently review the messages on the MSA1510i controller LCD panel to monitor the status of
your MSA1510i.
•
Operate the MSA1510i in a dedicated iSCSI LAN to isolate the iSCSI network from corporate and
external networks (strongly recommended).
•
Separate management traf
fi
c from iSCSI storage traf
fi
c. Provide separate physical LANs or create
Virtual LANs (VLANs) to segment the traf
fi
c.
•
Assign static IP addresess to devices in the network, including the MSA1510i.
•
Use only 1000BaseT Ethernet NICs and switches throughout the network.
•
Use quali
fi
ed Category 5e (or better) Ethernet cables throughout the network.
•
Ensure that initiators and targets are on the same Layer 2 Ethernet LAN. This guarantees the
integrity of the data traf
fi
c and maintains high network performance levels.
•
If more than one server will access the MSA1510i, protect the system from unauthorized or
accidental access by:
• Setting up VLANs to control initiator access to the targets.
• Enabling mutual initiator and target iSCSI CHAP authentication.
• Creating Access Control Lists (ACL), to control access at the LUN level.
•
Ensure the availability of the storage:
• Provide redundant power sources—Plug the two power supplies on the MSA1510i into
separate Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) on separate sources of power. If you have only
one UPS, maintain separate power paths by plugging one MSA1510i power supply to the UPS
on one power source and plug the other MSA1510i power supply to a separate power source.
• Provide redundant data paths—Include two separate and isolated iSCSI storage networks and
the associated hardware (switches, MSA controllers, MSA I/O modules, etc.) and software
components (MPIO multipathing software, etc.) in the con
fi
guration. Con
fi
gure targets using
portals on each controller.
• Create fault-tolerant logical units—Create LUNs using fault-tolerant RAID levels and striping
methods.
•
When assigning system names and aliases, use only the following characters:
• Uppercase alpha characters (A-Z)
• Lowercase alpha characters (a-z)
• Special characters (! # = ( ) ' ; , . and space)
•
When planning and con
fi
guring logical drives:
• Optimize performance and redundancy by striping the drives in the array across separate
storage enclosures on different SCSI buses, especially in mirrored environments using
RAID 1+0.
• Set the rebuild priority to
high
to minimize exposure during a drive failure and subsequent
rebuild.
• Customize the RAID level and striping method to the type of data that will be stored on the
logical drive.
