Shutting Do wn the Netw ork Distribution Serv er
Y ou'll need to sh utdo wn an existing netdist serv er b efore up dating it to
distribute a new v ersion of softw are. F ailure to do so can cause the update or
updist program to terminate and trigger a core dump.
Procedure
1. The netdistd daemon spa wns a c hild pro cess to handle eac h incoming
up date request. Th us, if three up date requests are b eing serviced, four
copies of the netdistd daemon are running (one paren t and three c hild
pro cesses).
Determine whic h pro cess is the p ar ent pro cess b y viewing the le in
/usr/adm/netdist.log .
The line sho wing the paren t pro cess in the log le will lo ok something like
this:
netdistd.560 14:59:46...Started on port 2107
Lines in the log le b eginning with netdistd indicate a \paren t" daemon.
The paren t daemon's pro cess ID (PID) is the n um b er immediately follo wing
netdistd (in the example ab o v e, this n um b er is 560 ). (see the following
section \Chec king the netdist.log File" for additional information on the
netdist.log le.)
2. Kill the original paren t daemon using the PID n um b er (see kil l (1) in the
HP-UX R efer enc e ), and w ait for an y c hild daemons to terminate normally .
Killing the paren t daemon prev en ts an y new connections from b eing
established.
Caution
Kill the c hild pro cess only if y ou m ust|if y ou do, y ou will
in terrupt an up date in progress.
