Example 1: Mo ving Files
Use the mv command to mov e les from one directory to another. F or example,
to mov e myfile in to the projects directory , t yp e:
$ cd Move to your home dir e ctory rst.
$ mv myfile projects
No w v erify that it w ork ed:
$ lsf List your curr ent working dir e ctory.
projects/ Wher e did myfile go?
$ lsf projects L o ok in the projects dir e ctory.
myfile new/ old/ Ther e's myfile . It worke d!
A single dot ( . ) for a path name represen ts y our curren t w orking directory .
Therefore, to mov e myfile from the projects directory bac k to y our curren t
w orking directory , t yp e:
$ mv projects/myfile . Don't for get the dot.
$ lsf List your curr ent working dir e ctory.
myfile projects/ It worke d; myfile is b ack.
$ lsf projects List projects.
new/ old/ The le myfile isn't ther e anymor e.
The general form of the mv command is as follows:
mv fr om p ath to p ath
where fr om p ath is the le name or path name of the le y ou w an t to mov e,
and to p ath is the name of the path to whic h y ou are moving.
