Setting Up a Netw ork Distribution Serv er
1. If y ou ha v e not already done so, read the preceding section \Before Setting
Up a Net w ork Distribution Serv er".
2. On the serv er, create the directory /netdist.700 if it do es not already
exist. (The netdist program will build a hierarch y under this directory that
includes a sub-directory lab eled 800 ; ho w ev er, y ou'll actually b e loading 700
lesets. The updist program do es not distinguish b et w een Series 700 and
800.)
Note
If y ou are also setting up the serv er to distribute Series 300/400
or 800 softw are, make sure those lesets are loaded in to a
directory other than /netdist.700 . Name the distribution
directory for the other series /netdist . Since the updist
program is able to distinguish b et w een 300/400 and 800
lesets, b oth of these arc hitectures can b e loaded in to the same
directory . If y ou sp ecify the /netdist directory when y ou
run updist and y ou load b oth Series 300 and 800 lesets, the
updist program creates separate subtrees for 300 and 800
under /netdist .
3. Make sure the /etc/services le con tains en tries for the netdist serv er.
The en tries should lo ok something like this:
netdist 2106/tcp # network file distribution
netdist.700 2107/tcp # network file distribution for Series 700
2106 and 2107 are the p ort n um b ers on the serv er for Series 300/400/800
and Series 700, resp ectiv ely .
If the en try do es not exist, add it b y t yping the ab o v e example in to the
/etc/services le on the serv er.
4. On the serv er, en ter,
/etc/updist
The updist program (a v ariant of update , see the previous c hapter)
transfers lesets from tap e or another serv er to a hierarchical structure
b eneath the distribution directory on the serv er. These lesets are the ones
