6.2.9. APPROACH EXAMPLE 3: COURSE REVERSAL WITH OFF-
AIRPORT IAF
In the previous two approach examples we were able to leave the KLN 94
in the Leg mode all the way to the missed approach point. However, when
the approach procedure includes a course reversal in order to get estab-
lished inbound to the FAF it is necessary to utilize the OBS mode.
Remember, when the unit is in the OBS mode it acts similar to a VOR
receiver in that it uses the OBS course selected on the external Nav indi-
cator (CDI or HSI) and there is no waypoint sequencing. Both approach
example 3 and example 4 demonstrate how to use the KLN 94 when a
course reversal is required.
An approach that is quite common is an approach that is based off of an
off-airport IAF with a course reversal. An example of this is the VOR - A
approach to McClellan-Palomar airport, KCRQ. To fly this procedure as
published use the following steps and refer to figure 6-40 for the proce-
dure. For this example assume that the aircraft is approaching from the
east.
1.
Load the approach into the flight
plan as described in section
6.2.3. Select OCN as the IAF
(figure 6-41).
2.
When you are within 30 NM of
the airport, the KLN 94 will automatically arm the approach mode and
provide the following message:
*Press ALT To Set Baro
. At this time
the KLN 94 will smoothly change the CDI scale factor to ±1.0 NM.
APR ARM
(or
TERM
) is now annunciated.
3.
Approaching the area ATC tells you to go direct-to the OCN VOR and
clears you for the VOR or GPS 22 approach to KCRQ. This is easy to
do from the NAV 4 page by pulling out on the right inner knob and
scanning through the active flight plan by turning the inner knob.
Since OCN is both the IAF and
the FAF make sure you select
the IAF which is indicated by the
“i” suffix after OCN (
OCNi
).
Once OCN is displayed in the
scanning window (figure 6-42),
press
D
and then
F
to initi-
ate a direct to operation to the
OCN IAF.
4.
At a distance of 4 NM to the OCN VOR, the KLN 94 will give the fol-
lowing message:
*If Required Select OBS
