Pre-heating the Portafilter and Filter Basket
If the portafilter and filter basket are cold, the extraction temperature will drop signi-
ficantly first, when the extraction just starts. This can affect the quality of your coffee
unfavourably. Thus, you should warm up the portafilter and filter basket before filling
in coffee grinds. For this, you may use hot water using the hot water function.
Important:
Portafilter and filter basket must be completely dry, before filling in cof-
fee grinds. Otherwise, during extraction the hot water from the group head could
run down beside the coffee grinds resulting in a poor extraction.
7. Point the steam wand at the drip tray. Hold the portafilter with filter basket under
the steam wand. Then, turn the hot water/steam switch clockwise to start the hot
water function.
8. When a sufficient amount of hot water has been given off, turn the hot water/
steam switch back to the vertical position to stop the hot water flow.
9. Thoroughly wipe dry the portafilter and filter basket.
FILLING IN COFFEE POWDER
10. When using espresso pads, ensure that the 1 cup filter basket is installed in
the portafilter. Place one single espresso pad in the centre of the filter basket. If
required, fold in the rim of the espresso pad to ensure that the rim of the espres-
so pad does not cover the rim of the filter basket. Then proceed with section
‘Starting the Espresso Extraction’.
11. When using coffee powder, fill the filter basket via the provided measuring
spoon: 1 spoonful with the 1 cup filter basket, and up to 2 spoonful in the 2
cup filter basket (see: ‘Filling the Filter Basket’).
12. Distribute the coffee powder as evenly as possible. For this, carefully tapping at
the sides of the portafilter may be useful.
