4.2.1
Handling the Drill String
Operation MU (make up)
1. The floor man attaches the next joint of a pipe in the
V-door when the Elevator has been lowered.
2. The Elevator is raised slowly until the new pipe hangs
vertically in the Elevator.
3. The newly picked up pipe is taken to the borehole and
screwed there with the pipe, which protrudes from
the PS-500.
4. When the pipes are connected properly to each other
the Elevator is lifted to pick up the load of the pipe
string.
5. The PS-500 gets the signal to raise the Slip Assembly.
6. The driller lowers the pipe string into the borehole,
until the tool joint is above the PS-500.
7. The driller centers the pipe string and sets the Slip
Assembly of the PS-500.
8. A feedback signal is given to the driller when the Slip
Assembly has been set.
9. The Elevator is lowered until the load is not hold by
the Elevator any more. Now the PS-500 is holding the
complete load.
10. The driller opens and removes the Elevator.
11. A new section of pipe can be picked up.
Operation BO (break out)
1. Perform Operation MU in reversed order.
Caution
• Never raise the Slip Assembly when
the PS-500 is under load. Always
make sure the Elevator holds the
pipe string properly before raising
the Slip Assembly.
• Never raise or lower the Slip
Assembly while pulling or lowering
the pipe string.
