Personal Safety
In addition to the specific maintenance and operat
-
ing instructions in this manual, the operator must
read and understand all instructions in this chapter.
Introduction
This equipment is designed with the safety of all
personnel in mind. Never attempt to change, mod-
ify, eliminate, or bypass any of the safety devices
installed at the factory. Guards, covers and shields
that are installed around moving parts are meant
to prevent accidental injury to operators and other
personnel. Do not remove them.
Make sure that everyone working on or near this
equipment is familiar with safety precautions.
We recommend the basic safety practices listed on
this and the following pages.
Operation and Repair Precautions
Lockout and Tagout Procedure
The lockout and tagout procedure is designed to
prevent the unexpected or accidental startup of
equipment and to alert all workers whenever it is
unsafe to operate any piece of equipment. When
used as intended, the lockout and tagout proce-
dure also protects personnel from energy stored in
devices such as springs, accumulators, batteries,
hydraulic systems, etc.
A lockout and tagout procedure should be per-
formed in the following situations:
•
Any time anyone is maintaining, repairing,
lubricating or, for whatever reason, working
on the equipment.
•
When the equipment is broken or, for what-
ever reason, unfit or unsafe to operate.
•
While clearing blocked or jammed mecha-
nisms.
•
Whenever the equipment is left unattend-
ed.
Unexpected operation of plant components dur-
ing service or repair could cause personal injury or
death. Make it impossible for anyone to start this
machine while others work on it or in it. Before per-
forming work always:
1.
Alert personnel that work is being done.
Figure 2.5
- Master Switch
1.
Place the master switch (1) in the OFF po-
sition and lock the switch in this position.
2.
Attach a DO NOT OPERATE or similar
warning tag to the console to alert other
personnel.
For lockout/tagout standards, see OSHA regulation
29CFR1910.147 Lockout/Tagout of Hazardous En-
ergy. Refer to state and local regulations for addi-
tional requirements.
The only person who is permitted to remove a lock
and tag is the one who applied them. Before re-
moving a lock and tag:
1.
Ensure that all safety guards are back in
place.
2.
Ensure all work is completed and all tools
are put away.
3.
Notify all workers that a lock is being re-
moved.
4.
Ensure all workers are positioned safely for
startup.
5.
Place controls in position for a safe startup.
6.
Ready the machine for safe operation.
