Inspect Battery Cables
Do not allow open flames or sparks near the batter
-
ies. Battery fumes are highly explosive.
Sulfuric acid in batteries is a poison and could
cause severe burns. Avoid contact with skin, eyes,
and clothes. When you work around batteries, pro
-
tect your eyes and face from battery fluid and ex
-
plosion.
When removing the battery cables, always remove
the negative terminal first then the positive termi
-
nal. This will reduce the chance of sparking.
Check the battery terminals for corrosion buildup
and tightness of connection.
Clean the cable connector and terminals if needed.
•
Remove the terminal cable.
•
Clean both the battery cable connector and
the battery terminal.
•
Reinstall the positive battery cable connec-
tor.
•
Reinstall the negative battery cable con-
nector.
•
Tighten both connectors securely.
Clean the battery. Batteries should be kept clean
at all times.
•
Make sure all the battery caps are on tight.
•
Make sure the vent holes in the battery
caps are kept open at all times to allow gas
to escape from inside the battery.
•
Wipe the outside of the battery with a cloth
to remove dirt and grime.
•
Remove the battery cables.
•
Clean the cables with a wire brush.
•
Soak the cables.
