3.7.2 Activating the redundancy failure notification
The redundancy failure notification feature is an optional feature in a redundancy system. It
can be activated so that the host computer will be warned if a master-backup switch occurs,
on the condition that the host computer supports this notification feature. The host computer
can be a billing system, a terminal used for diagnostics, or other computer.
When the redundancy failure notification feature is activated, it sends a warning to the host
computer if the following two conditions are met: a master-backup switch must occur, and
the Control Unit must receive a valid command. As soon as the Control Unit receives the
command, then the host computer will receive either a special code (packet-based protocols)
or a diagnostic message (Terminal protocol). Once activated, the feature operates on all three
ports with any protocol that is in use.
To toggle the redundancy failure notification feature on or off:
1. First log on with your password and type
setup
(3.6.5).
2. In
the
Control Unit IV setup screen menu, select the Toggle Redundancy Failure
Notification option by typing
5
at the SET) prompt, and then press <Enter>. If the
feature was disabled, then this command switches it to ON; if the feature was already
enabled, this command will switch it OFF.
3. The following information is displayed, indicating whether the redundancy failure
notification feature is ON or OFF, followed by the Control Unit IV setup screen.

System: OBP mode, 1048576 customers, CU4 ID: 0, Carrier tag: 0
Redundancy Failure Notification: OFF
ON indicates that the notification feature is enabled. When the master unit
1
receives a
command from the host computer, it will wait for a response (positive or negative) from the
backup unit before transmitting its response. If there is a problem, the master unit will return
an error code or a message indicating that the command was executed but that a problem
requiring a maintenance operation occurred. A packet-switched protocol will display a
special error code associated with the command whereas the Terminal protocol will display a
detailed message.
OFF indicates that the notification feature is disabled. The system does not transmit an error
code indicating that there was a toggle or that the backup unit (or master) is down. The
notification feature is usually disabled when packet-switched protocols are used on the COM
ports. Even though the notification feature is off, the two units will still switch roles if there
is an error, but no message will be returned. This setting is usually used when the host
computer does not support the additional warning code.
4. Save the new settings (see section 3.6.10) by typing
s
in the Control Unit IV setup
screen. This restarts the Control Unit with the new settings.
1
“Master unit” refers to the Control Unit that is operating as the main unit at the moment the host computer’s command is
received.
