Serial Port Interface
Serial Port Connections
Each NX Tester is equipped with two serial ports. Two additional serial ports are available with the
optional Communications Board, part number 5-4011. Serial ports are used to connect the NX Tester to
a printer, bar code scanner, Multiport Unit, or Extended Display.
See the diagram below for the proper wiring configuration between the NX Tester and other RS-232
devices. We recommend purchasing completed cable assemblies from Dynalab to guarantee the correct
connections.
Serial Port Data Communications
Each of the NX Tester’s serial ports is shipped from the factory with the following default data
communications parameter settings:
•
9600 bits per second
•
8 data bits
•
No parity
•
1 stop bit
•
Hardware flow control
These parameters may be changed through the NX Tester’s CONFIGURATION menu as explained in
the section of this document entitled ‘
NX Tester Menus’
.
The NX Tester accepts RS-232 ASCII input from an external device through use of the READ
Workflow item (explained in the NX Editor User’s Guide). Additionally, the Automatic Program
Selection feature accepts data from a bar code scanner attached to Serial Port 2. In both cases, the
ASCII data string must be terminated with the Line Feed character (decimal value 10 in the ASCII
table). Some devices may terminate ASCII strings with a combination of Carriage Return (decimal
value 13) and Line Feed characters. This is also acceptable.
