The SUBSTRING function specifies the parameters used by the Automatic Program Selection Using a
Bar Code Scanner feature. This feature is explained in detail in a subsequent section of this document.
The feature uses a bar code scanner to scan a part number or program name. When connected Serial
Port 2 the scanned barcode represents either a program name or a part number. The NX Tester will then
look for a match of the scanned data – it first will look for a program whose name matches the data. If it
cannot find a program whose name matches, it then looks for a defined part number in each program.
Once the first match is found, the NX Tester will automatically select and run the program.
The SUBSTRING function instructs the NX Tester to extract a substring from the scanned data, and use
the substring as the match criterion. There are two parameters to be set:
FIRST CHARACTER POSITION – using the up/down arrow keys, specify the first character
position of the substring, then press the green button to accept. The minimum value must be 01.
MAXIMUM CHARACTERS – using the up/down arrow keys, specify the maximum number of
characters for the substring. Note that if the remaining number of characters in the scanned data is
less than the specified MAXIMUM CHARACTERS, the substring will start at the FIRST
CHARACTER POSITION and end at the end of the scanned data. Note that even though this field
may be set to a value as high as 99, a maximum of 40 characters will be used, since this is the
maximum size of the Part Number variable. Anything beyond 40 characters will be truncated.
