Version 006
Controllers can be built with momentary pushbuttons or toggle switches which can be used to sound a horn, bell,
siren or other warning device. Some additional auxiliary crane functions may be: Magnet Power ON/OFF, Magnet
Lift/Drop, Latch, Unlatch, Grab Close, Grab Open, Hoist Select, Trolley Select, Brake Set/Release, and Service
Brake.
If control of more than one crane by a single controller is required to improve efficiency, Cattron MP96 system
controllers can be designed to selectively operate additional cranes. For information on additional special
functions, contact Cattron at
Operator Controller Labeling:
Portable remote controllers are applied to a variety of jobs, and can be custom
labeled, thereby making it easy to determine the exact function that each button, switch or paddle will operate.
Transmitter/Encoder:
The transmitter/encoder within the controller unit is connected to input devices such as
pushbutton, toggle or lever switches and potentiometers. Paddle-type and toggle-type controller units feature a
Push-To-Operate (PTO) safety switch that enables the primary function switches. The auxiliary function switches
are usually independent of the PTO switch.
System Initialization:
When power is switched on, the encoder’s microcomputer clears its database and
performs a test of all input switches.
Once it has verified that no critical switches are failed in the ‘ON’ state, a
unique address message is sent to the receiver/decoder. The decoder recognizes this address and, after some of
its own self tests, energizes the two OPR outputs, going ‘on line’. The OPRs are usually connected to the
equipment mainline contactor.
Batteries:
All controllers have battery pack and battery charging options. Rechargeable Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cad)
battery packs, as well as disposable Alkaline battery packs, are available.
Low Battery Warning and Battery Conservation:
All Cattron
controllers employ an LED to provide a ‘LOW
BATTERY’ indication. When transmitting with a good battery, the LED will flash green. Dependent upon the
controller type, a flashing red or amber LED will illuminate when approximately one hour of operation remains. An
automatic battery saver feature is standard, turning off the power when no functions are active for 15 minutes.
Additional Controller Functions:
The encoder’s microcomputer performs additional tasks, such as self-
diagnostics on startup, management of transmission times to allow time-sharing of the RF channel by multiple
users, and continuous testing of lever switches for failure.

Crane Bridge (Long Travel) Braking
An optional Cattron Two-Step Electro-Hydraulic Brake Package provides safety for the crane system. When
properly installed, the brake package will not allow operation of the crane unless sufficient brake pressure exists
to stop the crane in case of an emergency. Brake pressure is stored using a hydraulic accumulator. Any loss of
electrical power automatically results in application of the crane brake. This provides braking even when crane
power is lost or turned off for a short period of time.
The brake package is installed in parallel to the existing foot brake. This eliminates the need to replace the current
system. Cattron offers the brake package in several models for use with many different crane power sources,
including 110, 220, 440 VAC and 250 VDC. Any model of Cattron PRC, as well as a pendant or other brand of
remote control, can control brake operation.

Radio Frequency (RF) Receiver Options
Depending on your PRC system requirement, the MP96 Series receiver/decoder may be configured with one of
the following RF boards: the
R1HN
and
R2HN Receiver Boards
and the
R3HNX Transceiver Board
. These
three RF boards are the ones most often used with the MP96 Series receiver/decoder.
