c) Pumps
The printer is equipped with several pumps. They are the tube pumps that let the
ink flow by pressing the tube surface with the push rollers to produce negative
pressure in the tube. The four rollers sequentially press a tube, allowing for a flexible
volume control of the ink that is supplied or sucked.
Two supply pumps are used to run the ink from ink bottles to the air buffers, and
four suction pumps draw in the ink from the nozzles of the BJ print heads.
The push rollers and tube guide, which apply pressure to the tube are selected by
the pump selection cam, so that either the supply or suction pump is operated
depending on the purposes.
The rotation timing of the push rollers in the suction pump is detected at the pump
home position sensor, and the amount of rotation is controlled by the drive of the
purge motor (stepping motor).
