CHAPTER 2: Introduction
2. Introduction
The Mini-Modem V.92 is one of the finest intelligent data/fax modems available
today. This user guide will help you to install, configure, test, and use your modem.
This external modem provides high-speed data transfer and fax capabilities for
small businesses, telecommuters, and SOHO users. Its support of the ITU-T V.92
protocol enables downstream transmissions at speeds up to 56 kbps (see the NOTE
below) and upstream transmissions at speeds up to 48 kbps when connected to
V.92-compatible Internet service providers (ISPs). Transmissions between the Mini-
Modem V.92 and other client modems are limited to 33.6 kbps, as are upstream
transmissions to non-V.92-compatible ISPs and downstream transmissions that are
converted more than once on the telephone network. The MD1626A also supports
“Super G3” ITU-T V.34 fax communications at speeds up to 33.6 kbps with Class
2.1 fax commands.
With the modem, you get intelligent features, such as plug-and-play operation,
callback security, and remote configuration. In standard mode, the modem can
store up to four command lines or telephone numbers of up to 40 characters each
in nonvolatile memory. In callback security mode, it can store up to 30 passwords
and dialing strings. Other modem capabilities include modem-on-hold, AT&T
®
calling card tone detection, pulse and tone dialing, adaptive answer, DTR dialing,
and U.S. Caller ID reporting. It also offers two-wire leased-line operation, 11-bit
operation, V.42 error correction, V.42 bis and V.44 data compression, and self-
resetting lightning protection.
Please note that some V.92 features are turned off in the factory-default
configuration and may need to be turned on, depending on your needs. For more
information, see Section 4.5.
NOTE
Though the Mini-Modem V.92 is capable of 56-kbps download
performance, actual connection speeds may be lower. Line
impairments, public telephone infrastructure, and other external
technological factors may prevent maximum 56-kbps connections.
