BootP Relay Agent
As a Bootstrap Protocol (BootP) relay agent, a Nautica router
repeats BootP request and response datagrams across selected
interfaces. Allocated and/or relinquished addresses are monitored
by the BootP relay agent and are notified to the cul-de-sac routing
system. The router also passes DHCP transactions across subnet
and WAN links.
The BootP relay agent will broadcast discover and request
messages on all paths marked to be used for BootP-Relay. This
may result in both main and backup paths to a central server
activating to service requests. By specifying a specific server on
the originating router, multiple ISDN calls can be avoided in this
case.
The option is, by default, turned off in Nautica routers. To enable
BootP Relay Agent, move to the system# object of BCC and set it
there. For more information on this, please refer to Chapter 5.
If BootP is enabled, then at least one of the configured paths must
also be set up for BootP-Relay. This is done in the Path itself. For
more information on this, refer to Chapter 7.
Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)
PPTP is designed to use the already existing Internet protocols of
PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) and TCP/IP (Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol). PPTP allows a PPP session to be
tunneled through an IP infrastructure (like the Internet), creating a
Virtual Private Network (VPN).
PPTP creates a tunnel by wrapping PPP packets of information
(containing IP, IPX or bridge traffic) within IP packets for
transmission through the Internet. Upon receipt of this
information, the external IP packets are stripped away and the
original packet is then delivered to its destination. This allows the
transportation of packets that would not otherwise conform to
Internet addressing standards.
