STUDENT GUIDE
LESSON 2
Troubleshooting Basics
OBJECTIVE
: Upon completion of this lesson, the student should be able to
describe the basic steps needed to succeed in troubleshooting.
Below are the basic steps that should be followed when troubleshooting.
1.
Understand the Problem
Talk with the person who observed the problem. Read any passdowns, which
describe the issue. If possible repeat the problem yourself.
2.
Use Available References
If an RFC, TEI, or troubleshooting flowcharts for the problem already exists,
follow it.
3.
Brainstorm Root Causes
If the issue is routine, and you’ve already worked on it several times before,
run through the possible root causes in your head. If you're working on a new
problem, jot down the root causes on a piece of paper.
4.
Create a Test Plan
Come up with a test to eliminate each possible root cause. Once you’ve
identified all the tests prioritize the order you’ll do the tests by considering
how long each test will take, and how likely each root cause is.
5.
Escalate
If your test plan will require extensive downtime, if the issue will probably
require spare parts, which aren’t available onsite, escalate the issue to the Intel
duty pager.
6.
Update
If you’ve escalated an issue, or if the machine will be down for a while keep
the machine operators and the shift supervisor informed. They may need to
make decisions regarding unloading the pre-bake oven, or rerouting product.
