6. Using the Pinion Gear/Shaft Removal Tool and a
hammer, remove the pinion gear from the gear case
housing.

7. Secure the pinion gear in a bearing puller; then
remove the pinion bearing using a press. Account for
a collar and a bearing.

NOTE: If gears are being replaced, use the existing
shims.
NOTE: If the gear case housing is being replaced,
proceed to the following Shimming Procedure/Shim
Selection sub-section.
Shimming Procedure/Shim
Selection
It is very important to adjust bevel gears for the proper
running tolerances. Gear life and gear noise are greatly
affected by these tolerances; therefore, it is very impor-
tant to properly adjust any gear set prior to final assem-
bly.
The following procedure can be used on both front differ-
ential or rear drive gear case.
NOTE: All bearings must be installed in the gear
case and the pinion properly installed before pro-
ceeding.
Backlash
NOTE: Always set backlash prior to any other shim-
ming.
1. Install the existing shim or a 0.051-0.055-in. shim on
the gear case side of the ring gear assembly.

2. Install the ring gear with shim in the gear case; then
while holding the pinion stationary, rock the ring
gear forward and back to determine if any backlash
exists. If no backlash exists, install a thicker shim
and recheck.
