2. Cover connector ends and transceivers with clean dust caps when not in use, as
shown here:
Clean fiber optic cables
You should always clean a cable before connecting it.
• After every de-mating cycle, clean the ferrule before re-mating.
• Do not interchange connectors from one unit to another unit without first cleaning
the connector.
♦
To clean a fiber optic cable:
1. Hold the cable a couple of inches below the end and blow the fiber surface with a
stream of compressed air.
2. Drip one to three drops of methanol or isopropyl alcohol onto a sheet of lens paper or
a lint-free cloth.
3. Holding the connector well below the optical surface, place the wet portion of the lens
paper on the optical surface. Slowly drag the lens paper across the optical surface to
thoroughly wipe the side and end of the ferrule.
4. Visually inspect the surface of the ferrule under high-intensity light using a magnifier,
optical loop, or video inspection tool. If contaminants or streaks are visible, clean the
surface again if necessary.
5. Immediately connect the cable by gently inserting it into the transceiver or insert a
protective dust cap over the cable end.
NOTE
Doing so can damage the product by transferring small particles to the transceiver.
