3-8 | Dycor Dymaxion Mass Spectrometer
Communications Setup
This section describes how to connect the Dymaxion analyzers to the PC running
the software that accepts the incoming data. Usually this is the Dycor System
2000 software, although it can also be user software that follows the Dymaxion
serial communications protocol. Dymaxion supports either RS-232 or RS-485
communications.
•
Connect the Dymaxion’s communications port to the PC.
• Use software to read Dymaxion data. This includes Dycor System 2000 or
DyLink software, or the user’s own software with RS-232 or RS-485 com-
munications using Dymaxion serial communications protocol.
Select RS-232 or RS-485 Communications
The bottom left switch on the Dymaxion allows switching between RS-232 and
RS-485 communications (Figure 3-7).
Single Dymaxion
RS-232
DB-9 male connector
Connect to either 9-pin or 25-pin RS-232 serial port on PC.
Serial cable
9
-pin, DB-9 male connector on one end of the cable and a
DB-9 female connector on the other end of the cable.
• Connect the male-connector end of the cable to the
RS-232 port on the Dymaxion. See Figure 3-7
• Connect the female-connector end of the cable to the
RS-232 port on the PC.
The distance limit between the PC and the Dymaxion power supply with an RS-232
connection is 50 feet. If a longer distance is required, low capacitance RS-232 cable
can be used for up to 200 feet. However, RS-485 cable is recommended.
Networking Multiple Dymaxions
RS-485
On the Dymaxions,
the RS-485 connec-
tion is labeled “RS-
485.”
Connect the first Dymaxion in the network (see Figure
3-8) and the PC with the RS-485 connection using the first
RS-485 cable.
• Daisy chain the remaining Dymaxion power supplies.
• Network termination is required on the last power supply in
the Dymaxion network.
See the switch table in this section for termination resistor
information for 2-wire or 4-wire modes.
For new installations, we recommend using 4-wire RS-485 communications.
RS-485 Switch
Settings
Users can define RS-485 settings with the dipswitch on the
back of the Dymaxion (Figure 3-9).
