WORM SHAFT REPLACEMENT
Follow the instructions below to replace a worm shaft that is broken at the flexible coupling between the 2 gear
cases.
1
Remove the lower-front corner panel from the side of the machine with the damaged gear case.
2
Remove both brush drive shafts from the damaged gear case (follow instructions in
Brush Shaft Replace-
ment
section).
3
See Figure 7. Remove cap “K” and pull shaft “L” out of the damaged gear case.
4
Remove the other part of the broken shaft from the yoke (and the pulley - left gear case only) between
the gear cases. Clean the yoke thoroughly so the new worm shaft will slide easily into the yoke.
5
Remove the plastic shims and all gasket sealer from cap “K” and case “I”.
6
Slide the new worm shaft assembly (with bearings) into the gear case. Be careful not to damage the oil
seals at the other end of the gear case.
7
Put new shims, the same thickness as the old shims, on cap “K”. Pink shims are .015 inch, blue shims
are .005 inch and red shims are .002 inch. Do not use gasket sealer for this trial-fit.
8
Install cap “K” and tighten its mounting bolts securely.
9
Check the end play in the worm shaft, using a dial indicator. Proper end play is .005 - .007 inch. Add
shims (to increase end play) or remove shims (to decrease end play) as required.
10
When the proper end play is obtained, apply gasket cement to cap “K” and case “I”, install the cap and
securely tighten its mounting bolts.
