7.2 SETTING THE VOLUME CONTROLS
The HPSA-7100-R Volume Control adjustments have been preset at the factory for
nominal peak performance, however, once the HPSA has been installed and connected to
an External Source, the audio input level must be verified and the Line In, Master Volume
and Master Limit settings must be adjusted for site specific operating conditions.
The goal when setting Volume Controls is to adjust the Line-In level and the Master
Volume such that the Amplifier Output voltage does not exceed the voltage criteria for
providing maximum rated output power. Adjusting the Line-In will require
HyperTerminal to access the HPSA programming. The Master Volume may be
programmed using HyperTerminal or using the HPSA’s Control Panel.
Additionally, the Master Limit is set, using HyperTerminal, to match the value of the
Master Volume setting. Setting the Master Limit in HyperTerminal will prevent an
operator from using the Control Panel to increase the HPSA’s Master Volume beyond its
upper limit and possibly over-driving and damaging the HPSA drivers, resulting in a
degraded audio signal.
After programming the Volume Controls, it is necessary to test the HPSA as described in
Section 7.3, to verify all components are working correctly.

SETTING THE VOLUME CONTROLS AND TESTING THE HPSA IS
MANDATORY; THE FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS MUST BE
ADJUSTED TO MATCH THE SYSTEM’S SITE SPECIFIC OPERATIONS.
A portable notebook (laptop) with HyperTerminal installed, and a straight-
through male-to-female DB9 serial port cable are required to configure the
Volume Controls. If the laptop does not have a serial DB9 port, a USB/serial
converter is required.
