Battery
The battery is connected to the UPS via the BCB. The BCB can be closed manually and has an electronic tripping
device controlled by the UPS control circuit. In the case of rack-mounted batteries, the BCB must be installed as
close as possible to the battery rack. The same condition applies when the battery is installed at a distance from
the UPS cabinet. The power and signal cables connected to the UPS must be kept as short as possible.
The BCB provides the following features:
•
Isolated from the battery; safe and reliable
•
Short circuit protection
•
If the inverter is locked because the battery voltage is below the limit threshold, the circuit breaker will open
automatically in order to avoid over-discharging the batteries
•
If a remote EPO button is installed, the EPO button can be used to open the circuit breaker
•
Protection against spurious operation: In order to obtain the required backup time, batteries may be
connected in parallel, in this case, the BCB must be installed downstream of the point at which the batteries are
connected in parallel.
Warning
We recommend using the Vertiv BCB in such cases, since it is configured to protect against the risk, if the user
selects an alternative solution that does not satisfy the same specifications, then it may result in an increased
degree of risk.
Note
Only trained, authorized, and qualified personnel may operate and service the battery circuit breaker.
7.6
Installing and Connecting the Batteries
Prior to working with the batteries, remember that they contain hazardous voltages. For this reason only trained
and qualified engineers are permitted to install and connect the batteries. Reliable, insulated tools are mandatory
to ensure safety of the personnel.
7.6.1
Installing the Batteries
The following steps must be taken into consideration before installing the batteries.
•
Check the batteries (visual inspection) for signs of damage. Inspect the accessories supplied with the
batteries. Count the accessories to see if anything is missing
•
Read this manual carefully and adhere to the procedures described in it. Read the installation and
implementation instructions provided by the battery manufacturer along with the manual.
•
A vertical gap of 10mm must be maintained between the batteries so that the air is free to circulate.
•
Sufficient clearance must be maintained between the top of each row of batteries and the row of batteries
installed above them in order to permit personnel to monitor and service them.
•
The batteries must be installed starting from the bottom layer and working upwards in order to avoid creating
a situation where the center of gravity is dangerously high. The batteries must be installed properly and
protected against vibration or shocks.
•
Measure and calibrate the battery voltage after starting up the UPS
7.6.2
Battery Connection
•
All the battery cabinets or battery racks must be connected together and properly grounded.
•
When multiple batteries are used, they must be connected in series and then in parallel. Before loading and
power-up, check and confirm that the total voltage of the batteries is as defined in the specifications. The
negative and positive poles of the batteries must be connected to the corresponding battery terminals on the
UPS, as indicated on the labels on the battery and UPS.
Warning
Ensure that the battery poles are not inverted as this may cause explosions or fires and result in damage to the
battery and UPS as well as placing personnel at the risk of severe injury.
