7.5.1
Installation Environment
This section provides a brief description of the battery installation environment (site preparation for housing the
UPS) and the various factors associated with it.
Note
Only authorized, trained personnel or qualified engineers may install and connect the batteries. Batteries contain
hazardous voltages and must be handled using insulated tools for safety purposes.
Fresh air volume (EN50272-2001)
The battery operating environment must be adequately ventilated. The following fresh air ventilation
requirements must be satisfied during battery operation:
Q = 0.05 x n x Igas x Crt x 10–3[m3/h]
where:
Q = the fresh air ventilation volume per hour, expressed in m
3
/h
n = Number of cells
Igas = current producing gas during charging, expressed in mA/Ah
•
Igas =1, under float charging condition at 2.27V/cell
•
Igas = 8, under boost charge condition at 2.35V/cell
Crt = 20hr battery rated capacity
Temperature
Table 7.1 illustrates the ambient temperature range.

Remark
Recommended
optimal temperature
20°C to 25°C
The ambient temperature for the battery operation shall not be too
high or too low. If the average operating temperature of the battery
rises from 25°C to 35°C, the service life of the battery will be reduced
by 50%. If the operating temperature of the battery is over 40°C, the
service life of the battery will be reduced exponentially each day
Short
time
permissible
temperature
-15°C to 45°C
The battery service life span is dependent on the temperature. The higher the temperature, the shorter the
battery service life will be. At a low temperature, the change/discharge performance of the battery will be
reduced significantly.
For optimum results, the battery must be installed in a cool, dry environment where the relative humidity is less
than 90%, and away from heat sources and/or direct sunshine.
Battery temperature is dependant on ambient temperature, ventilation, space, float/boost charge voltage, and
ripple current. Uneven temperature on the battery strings will cause an uneven voltage distribution and this can
cause problems. Therefore, it is very important to maintain a balanced temperature in the battery string. The
temperature difference between the batteries of different layers must be kept to within 3°C. Valve-regulated
batteries are highly temperature-sensitive and the temperature range should be maintained within 15°C to 25°C.
If the battery cabinet is installed near the UPS, the installation environment must be designed based on the
battery temperature requirements rather than the UPS; i.e., if valve-regulated batteries are used, the indoor
ambient temperature must be maintained between 15°C and 25°C rather than the operating temperature range of
the main equipment. Provided the average temperature does not exceed 25°C, short duration temperature
excursions above this value are permissible.
7.5.2
Number of batteries
The number of batteries, EOD voltage, and float charging voltage remain the same, irrespective of whether the
UPS uses the 380 V, 400 V or 415 V voltage system (see Table 7.2).
Table 7.2
Parameter
380V/400V/415V
Number of cells (standard)
228 ~ 264
EOD voltage
1.60 Vdc/Cell ~ 1.90 Vdc/Cell, 1.63 V/cell recommended
Float charging voltage
2.2 Vdc/Cell ~ 2.3 Vdc/Cell, 2.27 V/cell recommended
