APPENDIX
Gateway products and suppliers
Note: gateways are often difficult to set up and POTS gateways in particular have shortcomings that are mainly limitations
of POTS itself. While the hardware mentioned below is excellent and we’ve tested with all of it. Native SIP is always the
best way to go. POTS should not be chosen because it is “safe”. POTS lines are far less reliable today, mostly because service
providers, many deregulated now, do not maintain their outside cable plant as they once did. We suggest that if you use POTS,
it is primarily for “backup” or emergency use. Some features will not work with POTS gateways (Busy out, call disconnect
supervision, and often Caller ID), and further, transmission will not be as loud, clear or natural sounding as with VOIP/SIP. The
companies below make great products, but they are limited by POTS technology for performance and dependability. Telos may be
able to provide very limited help with gateway support, but we actively discourage its use for the reasons mentioned above.

We have tested Patton gateways, such as the model 4940 for T1/E1 and ISDN PRI. The Patton gateways for POTS (FXO) and
ISDN BRI are also satisfactory.
