A maximum of 126 devices (masters or slaves) can be connected to one bus. The definition for system configuration contain
the number of stations, the assignment of the station addresses to the I/O-addresses, the consistency of I/O-data, the format
of diagnosis messages and the applied bus parameters.
Each PROFIBUS DP system consists of different types of devices; there are three types of devices:
•
DP-master Class 1 (DPM1):
This is a central control unit which executes data exchange with the remote stations (DP
slaves) by using a defined telegram cycle. Typical devices are e.g. programmable logical control units (PLC) or PC or
VME systems.
•
DP-master Class 2 (DPM2):
Devices of this type are devices for programming, projecting or operating purposes. They
are used for start-up in order to build up the DP system configuration or for unit control in running operation.
•
DP-slave:
A DP slave is a peripheral device (I/Os, drives, HMI, valves) which receives input information and transmits
output information to the peripherals. There are also applicable instruments which only provide either input or
output information. The quantity of input and output information is independent from the types of device but it
may amount to 246 Byte of input data and 246 Byte of output data maximum.
Transmission Protocol
The PROFIBUS transmission protocol offers two ways of bus access: the token-passing communication among complex bus
participants (masters) and subordinately the master-slave communication among the masters and the peripheral devices
(slaves).
