5.3 SHORT-TERM SHUTDOWN:
A short-term shutdown is defined as a period of time
in which the System is not utilized for up to four
weeks. An effective short-term protection for the
system and R.O. membrane element is a Fresh
Water Rinse of the entire system with fresh water
(product water from the system). This prolongs the
system life by minimizing electrolysis and retarding
biological growth.
NOTE:
If the System is equipped with an automatic
Fresh Water Flush [33 - 35] then it is not necessary
to read this chapter 5.3. The Automatic Fresh Water
Flush rinses the System every 7 days automatically.
However, see “Winterizing and Freezing” note below.
WINTERIZING AND FREEZING TEMPERATURE
STORAGE NOTE:
If the system is exposed to
freezing temperatures perform a Manual Fresh
Water Rinse as described below and follow the
included winterizing instructions.
MANUAL FRESH WATER RINSE PROCEDURE:
Follow the directions below if the System is not
equipped with an Automatic Fresh Water Flush
System [33 - 35], or if the system will be subjected to
freezing temperatures during non use.
This procedure displaces the system feed water with
fresh water and allows a short-term shutdown for up
to four weeks. Five gallons (19 liters) of fresh
product or potable water is required for the fresh
water rinse. These instructions also explain how to
Winterize the System. One gallon (3.8 liters of Food
Grade Propylene Glycol will be required to Winterize
the System.
1. Configure the System for a “
Once Through Rinse”
as illustrated in the drawings on page 4 of this
Section, and as described in item 5.2.A on page 8
of this Section.
2. Clean the Sea Strainer [4] Mesh Screen.
3. Clean the Plankton Filter Element [7].
4. Clean (hose off) or replace the 25 and 5 micron
Prefilter Elements [13 & 14] with new 25 and 5
micron Sea Recovery Pre-filtration Elements.
5. Fill the Rinse/Clean Solution Container [38] or a 5-
gallon container with clean, fresh water.
6. Press the “Start” switch. The fresh water rinses
the system and discharges out through the Thru Hull
Discharge Fitting [22].
7. Just prior to depleting the rinse water from the
Rinse/Clean Solution Container [38] stop the
system by pressing the Stop switch.
8. If the System will NOT be exposed to freezing
temperatures reconfigure the Suction Line for
normal operation. If the system will be exposed
to freezing temperatures during non use skip this
step and go to step 9 below.
a. Leave the Sea Cock Valve [2] closed.
b. Reconnect the Sea Strainer [4] outlet line to the
Outlet of the Sea Strainer, or reposition the
Inlet Clean Rinse Valve [36] to the normal
operating position.
IN NON FREEZING TEMPERATURES THE
SYSTEM MAY NOW BE LEFT UNATTENDED FOR
SEVERAL WEEKS. A GUIDE WOULD BE 4
WEEKS IN WARM CLIMATES AND 8 WEEKS IN
COLD CLIMATES.
HOWEVER, IF THE SYSTEM WILL BE EXPOSED
TO FREEZING TEMPERATURES CONTINUE
WITH THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES:
9. If the System will be exposed to Freezing
Temperatures during non use of the System,
configure the System for a “Once Through De-
pressurized Rinse” using the Product Relief Tube
Kit as illustrated on page 6 of this section and as
described in item 5.2.C page 8 and 9 of this
section “
ONCE THROUGH DE-PRESSURIZED
RINSE”.
10. Again, fill the Rinse/Clean Solution Container
[38] or a 5-gallon bucket with 4 gallons (15 liters)
of clean, fresh water. Add twenty percent (1
gallon / 3.8 liters) food grade propylene glycol to
the Storage Chemical Solution. This prevents
the water in the system from freezing.
11. Press the “Start” switch. The Winterizing
Solution rinses the system and discharges out to
waste [22].
12. Just prior to depleting the Winterizing Solution
from the Rinse/Clean Solution Container [38]
Stop the System by pressing the “Stop” switch
twice (2 times) in order to Stop the System as
well as deactivate the Fresh Water Flush Cycle.
