SECTION 9: VENTING
9.1 General Ventin g Re q uirements
This air t u rno v er u nit m u st b e v ented in accordance
w ith the r u les contained in this man u al and w ith the
follo w ing national codes and any state, pro v incial or
local codes w hich may apply:
United States: Refer to NFPA 54/ANSI Z223.1-latest
re
v ision, National F u el Gas Code for nat u ral gas and
LPG u nits. Refer to NFPA Article 31 - latest re v ision,
Standard for the Installation of Oil-B u rning
Eq u ipment for oil u nits.
Canada: Refer to CSA B149.1 - latest re v ision,
Nat u ral Gas and Propane Installation Code for
nat u ral gas and LPG u nits. Refer to CSA B139 -
latest re v ision, Installation Code for Oil-B u rning
Eq u ipment for oil u nits.
9.2 Recommended Flue Ventin g Practices
All indirect-fired air t u rno v er u nits are shipped w itho u t
fl u e/ v ent pipe components. It is the responsi b ility of
the installer to s u pply the v enting components.
All indirect fired air t u rno v er u nits m u st b e v ented.
Each air t u rno v er u nit m u st ha v e an indi v id u al v ent
pipe and v ent terminal.
Termination of the v ent pipe m u st b e located so that
the com bu stion f u mes can not b e dra w n b ack into the
air t u rno v er u nit or into any other o u tside air intakes.
Vent pipe diameter m u st match the diameter of the
air t u rno v er u nit's fl u e pipe extension. Recommended
v ent pipe is a minim u m 26 ga u ge gal v anized steel or
stainless steel for u nits w ith 6" (15.2 cm) fl u e pipe
extensions; minim u m 16 ga u ge gal v anized steel or
stainless steel for u nits w ith 8" (20.3 cm) or larger
fl u e pipe extensions. The installer m u st pro v ide a rain
cap or w eather cap. All joints m u st b e sealed. Type
"B" v ents are not accepta b le.
Do not s u pport the w eight of the v ent pipe on the
eq u ipment's fl u e pipe extension. Vent pipe m u st b e
self s u pporting.
On eq u ipment w ith a high t u rndo w n bu rner, it is
recommended to ins u late single w all v ent pipes.
Ins u lation m u st ha v e a minim u m temperat u re rating
of 1000° F (537.8° C).
Maxim u m v ent pipe length (horizontal or v ertical) is
40' (12.2 m). A total eq u i v alent v ent pipe length can
b e calc u lated u sing eq u i v alent straight pipe lengths
for tees and el b o w s red u cing the maxim u m v ent pipe
length b y 6' (1.8 m) for each s w eep el b o w , 2.5' (.7 m)
for the termination tee, and 10' (3.0 m) for each short
radi
u s el b o w .
The v ent pipe sho u ld b e fitted w ith a drip leg w ith a
clean o u t and a drain pl u g in the b ottom. The v ent
pipe shall b e constr u cted so that any w ater or
condensate that collects in the v ent w ill remain in the
drip leg and not drain b ack into the air t u rno v er u nit.
Be s u re the drip leg is constr u cted in a w ay that w ater
or condensate w ill not fall on air t u rno v er u nit's
controls w hen drain pl u g is remo v ed on gas-fired air
t u rno v er u nits only. Pitch horizontal v ents do w n w ard
1/4" (.6 cm) per foot to w ard o u tlet for condensate
drainage. On oil-fired and com b ination gas-fired/oil-
fired air t u rno v er u nits, pitch horizontal v ents
do w n w ard 1/4" (.6 cm) per 1' (.3 m) to w ards the air
t u rno v er u nit for drainage. S u pport horizontal r u ns as
req u ired to pre v ent sagging.
Do not install dampers or other restricti v e de v ices in
the v ent pipe.
The v ent pipe sho u ld not b e installed in s u ch a
manner that access to the components is o b str u cted.
Maxim u m clearances to com bu sti b les aro u nd the
v ent pipe are significantly higher than for the air
t u rno v er u nit.
The v ent pipe shall ha v e a minim u m of at least 36"
(91.4 cm) clearance to com bu sti b les, and b e g u arded
to protect personnel from coming in contact.
Appro v ed listed thim b le is to b e u sed w here v er the
v ent pipe passes thro u gh a com bu sti b le w all or
ceiling/roof.

Carbon Monoxide Hazard
Air turnover unit must be vented.
Air turnover unit must be installed according
to the installation manual.
Failure to follow these instructions can result
in death or injury.
