Accessing the presets via the RS-232 port
It is possible to switch between presets by means of command
codes or squarewave signals. Remote control over the ZOMBIEs
so becomes possible. The ZOMBIEs can be controlled either from
a PC or another RS-232 source, or by inputting a squarewave
signal.
PC
Certain command bytes trigger a switch to a different preset when received by the serial port. The
commands must be sent with 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 start bit, 1 stop bit and without parity.
However, the switchover does not take place until a minimum of 10 such commands have been
received. This is necessary to rule out transmission errors and to ensure compatibility with the
alternative squarewave signal method.
A further precondition for a reaction is that the desired preset is not yet active. If the preset is
already active, sending the same command code repeatedly has no effect on the device.
While switching preset, the device is reinitialized. All outputs are switched off for a brief period.
We recommend always sending such commands in bursts of 10 or more. Repeating the cycle once a
minute represents a neat solution to the following problem: if one device is switched off at the point
in time when the preset is changed, it will “unknowingly” start in a preset which is no longer valid!
If the command cycle is repeated at regular intervals, this will then be connected quickly and
automatically.
Squarewave Signals
A change of preset can also be changed by supplying Pin 2 (RxD) in the serial port with a
squarewave signal of a particular frequency. Each preset is matched to a particular frequency. A
frequency accuracy of 1-2% is fine – problems with the presets only start to occur when the margin
of error exceeds 5%.
All of those frequencies which can be multiplied by a whole number to give 4800 Hz are suitable,
provided the preconditions for the start and stop bits are fulfilled at 9600 baud. Seven such
frequencies exist. This implies, of course, that there are also 7 such command sequences, of which it
is only necessary to use 5. All of the frequencies mentioned can be generated using a normal 2.4576
MHz oscillator.
When the squarewave signal is switched on, it is important that this does not generate any
transitional states (except a brief pause in operation) during the switchover. The command signal
