Starting the program

The name of the update program consists of the number of the unit to be updated, and the revision
number. For example, the PC program

1202_25.EXE

contains the software revision

2.5

for

an

SDIF2 ZOMBIE 1202

.

After launching the program, the user is asked to

turn off the unit

connect the unit‘s serial port to the serial port of the PC

turn the unit on again

Hit

<ENTER>

to start the update.

The program documents all steps of the update on the PC screen. Depending on baud rate and
program size, data transmission may take a few seconds or several minutes. To preclude the
impression that the program has crashed, every data block transmitted is symbolized by a dot on the
screen.

The update procedure will hopefully terminate with a success message and the total number of
bytes transmitted. To ensure correct booting of the new software, once again turn the unit off and
then on again. - If a unit shows no sign of life, even after an apparently correct update procedure,
the cause may be that after the program has terminated, the PC still keeps transmitting a »BREAK«
status. If that seems to be the case, simply disconnect the link to the PC before turning on the unit.

Some Practical Advice

While updating a device, the front or rear panel LEDs are undefined, i.e. a few are on and a few are
off. This is meaningless, as while downloading new firmware, the device's front panel is
temporarily out of control. There is only one reliable source of feedback on the status of the
download in process: the PC screen.

With Microsoft Windows, the following problem could arise. The timing of the communication
protocol between the device and the PC is critical. Windows assigns CPU power in time slots.
Whenever the initialization of a communication session fails to fit within one time slot, the program
terminates. Starting the program from a DOS window is highly recommended. If the program
terminates prematurely, restart it from the same DOS window again. If you ignore this advice, your
serial port may become jammed. Once in a blue moon, it may be necessary to make several
attempts.

If the download is done from a very fast computer (Pentium 200 or faster), we recommend -
contrary to all logic - to start the program in blind mode (see below). Take this as a tip from real life
- the whys are often beyond rationality with Windows...
