The switch responds with the FIP Discovery Advertisement/Response To
Solicitation message. This message is enlarged to the maximum FCoE
frame size. The delivery of this message proves that the network is capable
of delivering maximum-sized FCoE frames. The message contains the
Available For Login (A) bit, which must be ON so that end devices can log in.
It also contains the fabric-provided MAC address/server-provided MAC
address (SPMA/FPMA) setting, which specifies whether FCoE MAC
addresses are provided by the switch (FPMA), or by a third-party server
(SPMA). FPMA is the common way of providing MAC addresses.

The end devices attempt to log in to the switch with the FIP FLOGI
message.

The switch responds with an Accept FLOGI or a Reject. The Accept FLOGI
contains all the Fibre Channel characteristics. It also contains the new MAC
address to be used by the end device for every FCoE communication. That
MAC address typically starts with 0E:FC:00, followed by the 3-byte Fibre
Channel source ID (S_ID).

When the login is successful, the regular FCoE frames flow. FCoE PLOGI
and other regular Fibre Channel and FCoE initializations follow the FIP
FLOGI.
Validation Process
1.
Set up the Analyzer’s TraceControl to capture FIP frames over the Ethernet
VLAN by setting these frame types as trigger conditions. The FIP EtherType
is 0x8914.
2.
Configure each device (adapter, switch port, FCoE storage) to enable
FCoE/FIP functions.
3.
Capture a trace.
4.
Use Analyzer Expert to examine the trace for errors on the FIP or FCoE
protocol.
5.
Open the trace in TraceView to view the FIP frames.
