*Cal Settings – The instrument calibration results are used in Sleuth mode. However, the actual calibration
is performed in Detective X mode so the settings are only valid then.
**Bkg Settings – Backgrounds are performed in Detective X mode only. However, Sleuth mode uses the
background collected in Detective X mode and displays a symbol on the screen (
) when a background is
not present.
5.4 COLLECTING DATA
In a typical scenario, Sleuth will be used to collect a background spectrum, a known spectrum, and one or
more spectra at optimum distance from the IPC. Quick acting measurement buttons are provided for each of
these operations. All of these are optional and more than one of any type can be collected without
overwriting previously collected data. The specific set of measurements collected is driven entirely by
operator training and/or specific instructions to the operator.
Five-minute background and five-minute known spectra are collected to provide Reachback facilities with
baseline data. These measurements can be used as reference data to assess instrument state of health, actual
energy to channel conversion, and detector efficiency. This data can often be used to make sense of collected
data even if the instrument is poorly calibrated or needs service.
While collecting data, the operator can temporarily suspend data collection with the pause
button (see Figure 105). The operator can also terminate an acquisition early with the “End
Early” button.
