4.10 USB INTERFACE FOR DETECTIVE X
Figure 70. USB Settings Page
Figure 70 is the USB Settings Page. This screen is accessed by selecting the
Communication
button from the
Settings
menu, then selecting the
USB
tab.
This screen controls the behavior of the rear-panel USB-to-PC (see Figure 5 or Figure 6) cable connection to
the Detective X unit. There are three options for this connection.
Data (Microsoft Mobile Center)
– This option allows an external PC to connect to the Detective X
using Microsoft Mobile Device Center (see Section 4.8.3).
Control (MCA mode)
– This option allows an external PC to connect to the Detective X using the
ORTEC CONNECTIONS interface. All ORTEC spectroscopy applications use a standardized interface
layer to communicate with supported gamma spectrometers. This interface reveals properties
particular to a given spectrometer through a multi-tab “MCB Properties” dialog.
3
This interface is
called CONNECTIONS in ORTEC’s other product literature, and the core of its functionality is a
component called the Universal MCB Interface (UMCBI). The ORTEC Programmer’s Toolkit (P/N A11-
BW) allows knowledgeable users to write custom applications that use the UMCBI to communicate
with generic MCBs (contact an ORTEC representative for more information).
USB Flash Drive
– This option allows an external PC to view the contents of the rear-panel USB Flash
Drive (see Section 4.8.2).
The item selected on this page will govern how the USB port behaves when a cable is connected to the
Detective X (even when not viewing this USB Settings Page). As such, when performing other Detective X
actions, such as performing an Identification Mode Survey, if the user connects a USB cable the Detective X
may lose either its data folder access or its connection to the onboard MCB electronics. In such circumstances,
the acquisition may cease until the USB cable is removed, or the user may be prompted that file saving cannot
be performed.
3
“MCB” is an acronym for
multichannel buffer
, a legacy ORTEC term denoting a device that produces a counts-vs-channel histogram,
where channel is linearly related to the energy deposited in the detector when the detector absorbs (or partially absorbs) a gamma-
ray.
