Color Mode
The best Color Mode selection for a job depends on what you are scanning
and how the file will be used:
•
Color
: largest file size, best quality
Good for documents with continuous tone color information.
•
Grayscale
: smaller file size, lower quality
Good for continuous tone documents, such as black and white pho-
tographs. When a color image is converted to a grayscale image,
the density of each pixel of the image represents the density of the
pixel in the original color image.
•
B/W
(Black and White): smallest file size, lowest quality
Good for high-contrast documents such as printed text and Line
Art. When a color image is converted to a black and white image,
each pixel is converted to either black or white—there are no
grays.
NOTE:
Using the B/W may remove speckling and paper grain patterns for
some originals.

Selecting the best color mode may require subjective decisions that
depend on your documents. For example, take a black and white text
document that has been marked-up with a red pen. Although B/W
scanning is often used for text-only documents, it may be better to
use the Color mode in this case so the red mark-ups show clearly.
Manuscripts and older printed matter may get better results by
scanning as continuous tone in grayscale or color to bring out the
shades and condition of the paper and the marks inscribed on it.
