Data Over Voice
Bearer Service
The process of sending data over a call that was established as a voice call.
Sending data in this method may result in a lower tariff in some parts of North
America.
Dynamic Host
Configuration
Protocol
An Ethernet protocol that provides a centralized administration point for
assigning network configuration information.
IP
See Internet Protocol.
IP Address
Internet Protocol address. The 32-bit (4 byte) address, defined by the Internet
Protocol in STD 5, RFC 791, used to represent a point of attachment in a TCP/
IP internetwork. An IP address consists of a network portion and a host
portion to make routing more efficient. It is usually represented in
dotted-decimal notation.

ISDN
See Integrated Services Digital Network.
ISP
Internet service provider.
Integrated Services
Digital Network
A digital telephone network for transmission of voice and data.
Internet Packet
Exchange
Novell’s internetworking protocol.
Internet Protocol
The main internetworking protocol used in the Internet. Used in conjunction
with the Transfer Control Protocol (TCP) to form TCP/IP.
LAN
See local area network.
local area network
A communications network serving users within a limited geographical area,
such as one floor of a building, controlled by a network operating system and
using a transport protocol.
MP
See Multilink Protocol.
MSB
See Most Significant Bit or Most Significant Byte.
MRU
See Maximum Receive Unit.
masquerading
A technique by which several hosts share a single IP address for access to the
Internet. This process is an extension of Network Address Translator (NAT).
