IEEE

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. IEEE (pronounced
I-triple-E) is an organization composed of engineers, scientists, and
students. The IEEE is best known for developing standards for the
computer and electronics industry. In particular, the IEEE 802
standards for local-area networks are widely followed.

IEEE 802.1p

A QoS method - A three-bit value that can be placed inside an
802.1Q frame tag.

IEEE 802.16

Also known as WIMAX. A group of broadband wireless
communications standards for metropolitan area networks (MANs)
developed by a working group of the IEEE.

IEEE 802.16a

An extension of IEEE 802.16. 802.16a operates in the 2-11GHz
frequency band over a theoretical maximum range of 31 miles with a
theoretical maximum data transfer rate of 70Mbps.

IEEE 802.1Q

The IEEE 802.1Q standard defines the operation of VLAN Bridges
that permit the definition, operation and administration of Virtual
LAN topologies within a Bridged LAN infrastructure. The 802.1Q
specification establishes a standard method for inserting VLAN
membership information into Ethernet frames. A tag field containing
VLAN (and/or 802.1p priority) information can be inserted into an
Ethernet frame, carrying VLAN membership information.

IEEE 802.3

A Local Area Network protocol suite commonly known as Ethernet.
Ethernet uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access bus with Collision
Detection CSMA/CD. This method allows users to share the network
cable. However, only one station can use the cable at a time. A
variety of physical medium dependent protocols are supported.

IEEE 802.11b

The IEEE 802.11b (also referred to as 802.11 High Rate or Wi-Fi). An
extension to 802.11 standard for wireless Ethernet networks, that
applies to wireless LANS and provides 11 Mbps transmission (with a
fallback to 5.5, 2 and 1 Mbps) in the 2.4 GHz band.

IEEE 802.11g

An extension to 802.11 standard for wireless Ethernet networks,
that applies to wireless LANs and provides 20+ Mbps in the 2.4 GHz
band.
