Introduction

This section describes example applications for the Vanguard 320.

LAN and Legacy
Protocol over
Frame Relay

The Vanguard 320 supports multiprotocol encapsulation of IP traffic and legacy
serial protocols over frame relay as specified by RFC 1490. As shown in Figure 1-2,
a SNA cluster controller connects to a serial port on the Vanguard 320 and the
Ethernet LAN connects to the 10BaseT Ethernet port. The Vanguard is fully
interoperable with third party routers via RFC 1490.

As shown in Figure 1-3, the Vanguard 320 can support encapsulation of video and
legacy protocol over frame relay. This use of Vanguard 320 suits banking
applications such as Automated Bank Machines (ABMs). With Dial on Demand
software feature enabled, the Vanguard 320 initiates a connection only when there is
data transfer, i.e. only for the duration of a bank transaction. The RemoteVU
Daughtercard can capture video and send video streams to the central bank’s security
system.
