IP Protocol and DS3/E3 Data Transfer

The CM 100Base-T radio processes both Internet Protocol (IP) data and DS3/E3 TDM
data. Entering the radio through standard RJ-45 connectors, two separate 100Base-T
Ethernet channels, LAN A and LAN B, input IP data to bi-directional switches on the
SYNDES board. Each switch functions as a learning bridge that directs incoming IP data
to intended network destinations according to addresses on the incoming data packets.

A Mux on the SYNDES receives IP data from the Ethernet switches and selects data, on
a priority basis, for subsequent processing and network distribution. SYNDES
configuration sets data path priority to either

modes. The

SYNDES discussion in Chapter 3, Section 3-11 details data priority modes of the three
inputs: LAN A, LAN B, and DS3/E3. Text in the next subsection defines how priority
modes effect network traffic.

The SYNDES also accepts TDM data from front-panel BNC connectors. The SYNDES
multiplexes IP and TDM data into packets that contain prioritized data with packet
headers, which specify packet content and network radio destination. For data to be
transmitted across a hop to another site, the multiplexed data is modulated and sent to the
radio transmitter and an antenna for RF transmission to a far-end radio. For the near-end
radio to receive RF data being transmitted from a far-end 100Base-T radio, the near-end
radio first receives, demodulates, and demultiplexes the data before applying it to the
near-end Ethernet switches. Data packets then go to customer equipment by way of LAN
lines A and B.
