FLOW SYSTEM and FLOW CALIBRATIONS
5.1 Flow System Diagram
The BAM 1020 is designed to operate with an air flow rate of 16.70 liters per minute (L/min or
LPM). The flow rate must be maintained at this value in order for the commonly used the EPA

inlet head (BX-802) and PM
2.5
cyclones (BX-806, BX-807, BX-808 or BX-809) to work
effectively. Periodic airflow audits must be performed to ensure that the BAM 1020 maintains
the 16.70 LPM flow rate.
Complete BAM 1020 Flow Control System
All BAM 1020 monitors have a mass flow sensor and a barometric pressure sensor. The
BAM 1020 is also equipped with an ambient temperature sensor model BX-592 or BX-596.
Temperature and barometric pressure measurements are needed to convert mass flow into
volume flow rate (LPM).
5.2 Flow Control and Flow Reporting Types
– Standard or Actual Flow
BAM 1020 monitors with firmware revision 3.0 or later (after 2006) have both a FLOW TYPE
and a CONC TYPE setting. Both can be set to either STD or ACTUAL (see Section 6.3). The
BAM 1020 is capable of controlling the flow using either standard or actual
temperature/pressure conditions, and can independently report the particulate concentrations
based on either a standard or actual volume of sampled air. BAM 1020 monitors with
firmware revision 2.58 and earlier (pre 2007) had a single FLOW TYPE setting which set both
the flow control and the concentration reporting conditions.
