Rear eyes
Use lashing eyelets
:
with straps and chains
with suitable fixtures to lash the vehicle. For
permissible loads and all further information,
see the separate lashing instructions.
Recovering the vehicle
Important safety notes
!
Make sure the ignition is switched off
before recovering the vehicle. Disconnect
the batteries or open the battery isolator
switch if:
R
the ignition cannot be switched off
R
the batteries are excessively discharged
R
the vehicle is not accessible
!
Tow points have a limited load capacity.
They should only be regarded as the suitable
points for the external application of force
and are intended for experienced recovery
specialists. Adherence to instructions is at
the discretion of the recovery specialists. If
the vehicle is pulled with recovery aids by
the wheels/wheel hubs, damage to the
steering may result.
!
After righting the vehicle, the engine must
not be started. It could lead to oil flooding
caused by accumulation of:
R
engine oil in the exhaust system
R
engine oil in the charge-air cooler
R
engine oil in the intake area of the engine
R
engine oil in the cylinder head or in the
cylinders themselves
This could lead to engine damage. Have the
engine and the cooling and exhaust system
checked at a qualified specialist workshop
before starting the engine again.
The term recovery should be understood as
righting and/or pulling out a stuck vehicle that
cannot be freed by its own power using the
engine or by a winch.
The vehicle should be unloaded if possible.
This reduces the recovery forces required. Fur-
ther damage to the vehicle can be reduced to
a minimum. If the vehicle cannot be unloaded,
use as many tow points as possible.
When the vehicle is ready to continue the jour-
ney on its own power or to be transported,
recovery has ended.
The work required afterwards involves loading
the vehicle onto a transporter, transporting or
towing the vehicle.
When recovering a vehicle, pay attention to
the following safety components:
R
chassis (side members and cross members)
R
cab (cab mountings)
R
steering (steering spindle, steering wheel,
steering gear, pitman arm, steering lever, tie
rod levers, steering cylinder, drag links, tie
rods, joints, steering gear mountings on
chassis)
R
front axle (front axle housing and mountings
for suspension and brake, steering-knuckle
pin, steering knuckle)
R
rear axle (rear axle housing and mountings
for suspension and brake, rear axle housing
with steering elements)
R
axle attachment (springs, spring shackle,
spring bracket, stabilisers, including mount-
ings)
R
wheels (wheel hubs, tyres, rims, wheel
mountings)
R
brakes (all control units and brake force
transmission devices, mechanical, pneu-
matic and electrical, brake drum, brake cal-
liper)
R
propeller shafts
R
vehicle connection point (trailer couplings
and front towing couplings with attachment,
drawbars)
R
electrics (wiring harness or electric cables)
Righting a stuck vehicle
Before righting the vehicle, apply the parking
brake.
Use as many tow points as possible.
To minimise bending stress and chassis load,
use the towing and lashing eyelets spaced out
over the chassis. These are located on the
Jump-starting, tow-starting and towing away
