Make sure neither you nor the battery is elec-
trostatically charged. Electrostatic build-up
can be produced:
R
by wearing synthetic clothing
R
as a result of friction between clothing and
the seat
R
if you pull or slide the battery over carpets
or other synthetic materials
R
if you wipe the battery using a cloth

WARNING
During the charging process, a battery pro-
duces hydrogen gas. If a short circuit occurs
or sparks are created, the hydrogen gas can
ignite. There is a risk of an explosion.

Make sure that the positive terminal of a
connected battery does not come into
contact with vehicle parts.
R
Never place metal objects or tools on a
battery.
R
It is important that you observe the
described order of the battery terminals
when connecting and disconnecting a bat-
tery.
R
When jump-starting, make sure that the
battery poles with identical polarity are
connected.
R
It is particularly important to observe the
described order when connecting and dis-
connecting the jump leads.
R
Never connect or disconnect the battery
terminals while the engine is running.

WARNING
Battery acid is caustic. There is a risk of
injury.
Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Do
not inhale any gases released from the bat-
tery. When carrying out maintenance work
on the battery, wear acid-resistant protec-
tive clothing, particularly protective eye-
wear, protective gloves and an apron. Do
not lean over the battery. Keep the batteries
out of the reach of children.
If you come into contact with battery acid,
observe the following:
R
immediately rinse battery acid off skin
thoroughly with clean water and seek
immediate medical attention.
R
if you get battery acid in your eyes, rinse
them thoroughly with clean water immedi-
ately. Consult a doctor without delay.

Environmental note
Batteries contain pollutants.
It is against the law to dis-
pose of them along with
household waste. They
must be collected sepa-
rately and recycled in an
environmentally responsible
manner.
Dispose of batteries appro-
priately. Hand over dis-
charged batteries to a quali-
fied specialist workshop.
Transport and store full bat-
teries in an upright position.
When transporting batter-
ies, secure them so that
they do not tip over. Note
that battery acid could
escape into the environ-
ment through the ventila-
tion openings in the stop-
pers.
Observe the safety notes and protective meas-
ures when handling the battery.
Risk of explosion
Fire, open flames and smoking are
prohibited when handling the bat-
tery. Avoid producing sparks.
Battery acid is caustic. Avoid con-
tact with skin, eyes or clothing.
Wear appropriate protective cloth-
ing, in particular gloves, an apron
and face protection.
