Allow an overheating engine to cool down
before opening the bonnet. If there is a fire
in the engine compartment, leave the bon-
net closed and notify the fire brigade.
G
WARNING
There are moving components in the engine
compartment. Certain components may
continue to move or suddenly move again
even after the ignition has been switched
off, e.g. the radiator fan. There is a risk of
injury.
If you have to carry out work in the engine
compartment:
R
switch off the ignition
R
never touch the dangerous areas sur-
rounding moving components, e.g. the
rotation area of the fan
R
remove jewellery and watches
R
keep items of clothing and hair, for exam-
ple, away from moving parts.
G
WARNING
Service product can be poisonous and haz-
ardous to health. There is a risk of injury.
Observe the instructions on the respective
original container when using, storing and
disposing off service products. Always store
service products in the sealed original con-
tainer. Always keep service products out of
the reach of children.
G
WARNING
The cooling system is pressurised, particu-
larly when the motor is warm. If you open
the cap, you could be scalded if hot coolant
sprays out. There is a risk of injury.
Let the engine cool down before you open
the cap. Wear protective gloves and protec-
tive eyewear when opening. Open the cap
slowly to release pressure.
!
Do not operate the vehicle if the coolant
level is too low. Otherwise, the engine may
be damaged.
If the coolant level in the coolant expansion
tank is too low, the on-board computer dis-
plays the yellow (
page 92) event window with the
*
sym-
bol.
Only open the coolant expansion tank when
the coolant temperature is below 50 †.
The coolant level can only be accurately deter-
mined when the coolant temperature is
between 0 † and 25 †. First check the cool-
ant temperature using the on-board computer
If you need to top up coolant, add corrosion
inhibitor/antifreeze additive as specified in
Sheet No 325.5 to the water, e.g. Glysantin
®
G40
®
. Pay attention to the coolant mixture
ratio and the water quality (
mix the water and the antifreeze/anti-corro-
sion additive together outside the coolant cir-
cuit, then fill the coolant expansion tank with
the mixture.
X
Park the vehicle on a level surface.
X
Apply the parking brake.
X
Switch off the engine.
X
X
Turn cap
:
slowly anti-clockwise and
release the pressure.
X
Unscrew and remove cap
:
.
X
Check coolant level.
The coolant in the expansion tank must
reach up to the edge of the filler neck.
X
Top coolant up to the edge of the filler neck.
X
Replace cap
:
and tighten it as far as it will
go.
X
Run the engine briefly at varying engine
speeds.
X
Switch off the engine and recheck the cool-
ant level.
X
Close the bonnet.
