moderate pressure (approx. 30  lbs./
14 kp)  on the  parking  brake pedal

while travelling  at a speed around

30 mph  (50 km/h)  on  dry  road  until

the car comes near to standstill.  Pull

release  knob during  this process!

Repeate procedure once or twice.

Exercise  care, the stoplights do  not

work.

Have all  inspections of and  w ork on

the brake system  carried  out by a
MERCEDES-BENZ service station.

If the  parking  brake  is released  and

the brake warning  light  in the  in
strum ent cluster comes on,  either
the brake fluid  level  in the  reservoir

is too  low.

Brake pad w ear may cause a

shortage of brake fluid  in the

reservoir.  Install only brake pads
recommended  by us.

If other than  recommended  brake
pads are installed,  the  braking
properties of the vehicle can  be

affected to an  extent that the safety

is substantially impaired.

Brake Pad Wear Indicator

The brake pad w ear indicator in  the

instrum ent cluster comes on when

the key  in the steering  lock is
turned to  driving  position  “ 2”  and

it must go out when  the engine  is
idling.  If the ind icato r lights during
braking  or driving, this shows that

the fron t wheel  brake pads are
worn  down.

Have brake system checked  in  a
MERCEDES-BENZ service station

as  soon  as  possible.

Brake Fluid

During the course of the operation

of the vehicle,  the  boiling  point of
the brake fluid  is continuously
being  reduced through  the absorp

tion  of moisture from  the atmos

phere.  Under extrem ely hard  ope
rating  conditions, this  moisture

content can  lead to the form ation

of vapor in the system  thus  reducing
the  system ’s efficiency. The brake
fluid  must therefore  be  replaced
annually,  preferably  in  the spring.

It is  recommended to  use only
brake fluid  approved  by
MERCEDES-BENZ.

Your MERCEDES-BENZ dealer w ill

provide you with  additional  infor
mation.

Safe Driving

Charge Indicator Light

Should  the charge  ind icato r light

fail to come on  p rior to starting
when the  ignition  key is  in  posi
tion  “ 2 ”  o r should  it fail to  go  out
after starting  or during operation,
this  indicates a fault which  must be

repaired  at a MERCEDES-BENZ

service station  as soon  as possible.

Oil  Pressure Gauge

The oil  pressure may drop at  idle
speed to 7.1  psi  (0.5 kp/sq.cm)  if
the engine is at operating tem per
ature. This w ill  not jeopardize its
operational  reliability.  Pressure
must,  however,  rise  imm ediately
upon  acceleration.

Coolant Temperature Gauge

Due to the  pressurized  cooling

system,  the coolant only starts

boiling  at a tem perature of approx.

257°  F (125°  C)  with an  antifreeze-

blended  coolant fill  protecting

down to  —22°  F (—30°  C)  (see also

“ Fuels,  Coolants,  Lubricants,  e tc.” ).

The coolant tem perature  may rise
to the  red  m arking  in the  case of

high  am bient tem peratures and

when  travelling  in  mountainous

terrain.
