Starting and Turning off the Engine 230
Engage parking brake or service
brake before starting the engine.
Place the gear selector lever in
either “ N ” or “ P” position before
starting the engine.
Turn key in steering lock to position
“ 2 ” . The charge indicator light must
come on.
Cold Engine
Depress accelerator to the floor
once and release it. Turn key in the
steering lock clockw ise to the stop.
Start w ithout actuating the
accelerator. Only release key when
engine is running smoothly.
In case of m isfiring increase engine
speed fo r some seconds. Repeat
this procedure if necessary.
Hot Engine
Turn key in steering lock clockw ise
to the stop. Do not actuate
accelerator.
If the engine has not fired after
approx. 4 seconds, depress
accelerator to the flo or and con
tinue cranking until the engine runs
sm oothly. Release key and back
off a ccelerator after the engine
has started.
Turning off
Turn the key in the steering lock to
position ''0 ” and only remove the
key when the vehicle is at standstill.
If the coolant tem perature is very
high (e. g. after hard driving on
mountain roads), do not shut off the
engine imm ediately but allow it to
run on fo r 1—2 minutes at increased
idle speed.
Hints
Observe the oil pressure gauge
imm ediately after starting the
engine. In a very cold engine the
oil pressure w ill only rise slowly,
some time after the engine has
started. Do not rev up the engine
before pressure is registered on
the pressure gauge.
The charge ind icato r light must go
out as soon as the engine has
started.
Do not engage the starter continu
ously fo r more than 20 seconds.
Should the engine have been
flooded due to several unsuccess
ful starting attempts and w ill no
longer fire, depress the accelerator
com pletely w hile starting. In this
way the m ixture becomes com bus
tible again. Ease off the accelerator
only when the engine is running
smoothly.
At ambient tem peratures of less
than —4° F ( — 20° C), depress the
a ccelerator three tim es p rior to
starting.
