Coolants
The coolant is a m ixture of w ater
and antifreeze. In the w orks the
coolant is blended with antifreeze
offering protection to approx.
- 2 2 ° F (-3 0 ° C). The coolant
tem perature gauge in the instru
ment cluster is matched with it and
corrosion inhibition in the cooling
system is ensured at the same time.
The coolant remains in the cooling
system all year round and must be
renewed after 2 years at the latest.
This applies also to tra ile r opera
tion, hard driving and to vehicles
driven in tropical countries.
If coolant has leaked from the
cooling system, replace the missing
quantity with w ater and a recom
mended brand of antifreeze. For
normal replenishm ent (due to
evaporation of water) plain w ater
w ill do.
The w ater should be clean, and soft
to m oderately soft. It should also
contain the least possible propor
tion of disolved m aterials (potable
w ater quality).
Antifreeze in the coolant should
ensure minimum protection to
- 4 ° F ( -2 0 ° C).
If no antifreeze is available, add a
treating agent to the cooling w ater
(for corrosion inhibition in the
cooling system). To treat the co ol
ing water, do not use more than
1 % (10 cu. c m /l) of a recom m end
ed treating agent.
W ithout antifreeze the coolant
already starts boiling at approx.
244° F (118° C).
Antifreeze
Prior to the onset of the cold
season, check the coolant fo r its
resistance to cold. Repeat this
check during the cold spell. Regular
testing of the antifreeze concen
tration is carried out only at each
MERCEDES-BENZ m aintenance
service.
To prevent damage to the cooling
system, fill only with recommended
brands of antifreeze.
Any MERCEDES-BENZ service
station w ill readily advise you on
recommended antifreeze brands.
