A BS-B rake System
(Anti-Lock Brake System)
You can te ll if y o u r v e h ic le is
e q u ip p e d w ith an ABS by th e ye llo w
in d ic a to r lam p w ith th e letters
“ A N TILO C K " in th e in s tru m e n t
c lu s te r (see page 11).
The ABS prevents th e w heels fro m
lo c k in g up above a speed o f ap­
prox. 3 km /h / 2 m ph in d e p e n d e n t of
road su rfa ce c o n d itio n s . It is neces­
sary, how ever, th a t a speed o f ap­
pro x. 8 km /h / 5 m ph has been ex­
ceeded at least o n ce a fte r sta rt-u p .
A t th e in s ta n t one o f th e w h e e ls is
a b o u t to lo c k up, you w ill n o tic e a
s lig h t v ib ra tio n in th e brake pedal
and th e ve h icle , in d ic a tin g th a t the
ABS is e n h a n c in g th e d riv e r’s a b ility
to c o n tro l th e v e h ic le by p re ve n tin g
th e w h e e ls fro m lo c k in g . T his also
in d ic a te s th a t th e ABS is in the re g ­
u la tin g m ode. On s lip p e ry road s u r­
faces, th e ABS w ill already respond
w ith a s lig h t b rake pedal pressure.
The p u ls a tin g brake pedal can be
an in d ic a tio n o f haza rd o u s road
c o n d itio n s , and you may w a n t to
take e xtra care d riv in g .

The ABS in d ic a to r lam p in th e in ­
s tru m e n t c lu s te r com es on w ith the
key in s te e rin g lo c k p o s itio n 2 and
s h o u ld go o u t w ith th e e n g ine
ru n n in g .
If th e c h a rg in g v o lta g e fa lls below
10 vo lts, th e in d ic a to r lam p com es
on and th e ABS is sw itch e d off.
W hen th e v o lta g e is above th is
value again, th e in d ic a to r lam p
sh o u ld go o u t and th e ABS w ill be
o p e ra tio n a l.
If th e ABS in d ic a to r lam p does n o t
go out, it in d ic a te s th a t th e ABS has
d e te cte d a m a lfu n c tio n and has
s w itc h e d o ff. In th is case, th e brake
system fu n c tio n s in th e usual m an­
ner, b u t w ith o u t a n ti-lo c k assist­
ance. W e re co m m e n d th a t you v is it
an a u th o riz e d MERCEDES-BENZ
d e a le r as soon as p o ssib le to have
th e system ch ecked.
