Starting and Turning off the Engine
Engage p a rk in g brake befo re s ta rt­
ing th e engine.
M ove g e a rs h ift lever to neutral
(s e le c to r lever p o s itio n s “ P ” o r “ N ”
on a u to m a tic tra n sm issio n s).
Cold Engine
T urn key in s te e rin g lo c k to p o s i­
tio n 2. C harge in d ic a to r and p re ­
g lo w in d ic a to r la m p m ust com e on.
The p re g lo w p ro ce ss starts. W hen
th e p re g lo w in d ic a to r goes o u t, th e
e n g in e is ready fo r sta rtin g .
A m b ie n t T e m p e ra tu re
e xce e d in g 0°
C l +32° F:
T u rn key in s te e rin g lo c k clo c k w is e
to th e stop. Do n o t depress a cce l­
era to r. Release key o n ly w hen the
e n g in e is firin g regularly.
A m b ie n t T e m p e ra tu re
b e lo w 0 ° C / + 32° F:
Depress a c c e le ra to r and c lu tc h ped­
al (if a p p lic a b le ) to th e flo o r. Turn
key in s te e rin g lo c k c lo c k w is e to the
stop. Release key o n ly w hen th e en­
g in e is firin g re g u la rly and back o ff
a c c e le ra to r slow ly.
Do not in te rru p t th e s ta rtin g p ro c ­
ess. If th e e n g in e is very c o ld it is
p o ssib le th a t it w ill fa il to sta rt on
s u b s e q u e n t a ttem pts.
Hot Engine
T u rn key in s te e rin g lo c k c lo c k w is e
to th e stop and s ta rt e n g in e im m e d i­
ately w ith o u t d e p re ssin g th e a c c e l­
e ra to r. Release th e key as soon as
th e e n g in e is firin g regularly.
Turning off
T u rn key in s te e rin g lo c k to p o s i­
tio n 0 and rem ove o n ly w hen the
v e h ic le has sto p p e d .
S h o u ld th e e n g in e c o n tin u e to o p e r­
ate w ith th e key in s te e rin g lo ck
p o s itio n 0, re fe r to page 66.
W ith very h ig h c o o la n t te m p e ra ­
tu re s (e.g. a fte r d riv in g on m o u n ta in
passes), do n o t s h u t d o w n th e en ­
g in e im m e d ia te ly b u t a llo w it to run
at s lig h tly increased id le speed fo r
a p p ro x im a te ly 1 - 2 m inutes.
Notes:
Due to th e in s ta lle d s ta rte r n o n ­
repeat u n it, th e key in th e steering
lo c k m ust be re tu rn e d to 0 p o s itio n
b e fo re m a kin g a new s ta rtin g at­
tem pt.
O bserve th e oil p ressure gauge im ­
m ed ia te ly a fte r sta rtin g . In a very
c o ld e n g in e th e o il p ressure w ill
o n ly rise slo w ly, som e tim e a fte r the
e n g in e has started. Do n o t speed up
th e e n g in e b e fo re pre ssu re is re g is­
tered on th e p ressure gauge.
The ch a rg e in d ic a to r lam p m u st go
o u t as soon as th e e n g in e has
started.
If th e p re g lo w in d ic a to r fa ils to lig h t
up, th e p re g lo w system is d e fective
and s h o u ld be repaired at an au ­
th o riz e d M ERCEDES-BENZ dealer
at th e e a rlie s t p o ssib le date.
In areas w h e re te m p e ra tu re s fre ­
q u e n tly d ro p b e lo w - 1 8 ° C/0° F, we
re co m m e n d th a t a b lo c k heater is
in sta lle d . Every MERCEDES-BENZ
