VALVE TIMING
Checking the valve timing
Detaching the cylinder head cover, cylinder 1
• Unscrew the mounting bolts (2)
• Remove the cylinder head cover (1)
• Clean the sealing surfaces
Attaching the engine barring gear
• Remove the cap with seal and TDC marking plate
from the ywheel housing
• Clean the sealing surfaces
• Attach the
Engine barring gear [100] (1) on the
ywheel housing
• Turn the engine in the engine's running direction
with the Engine barring gear [100] (1) and the Gear
ratchet [101] until the 1st cylinder valves are in
overlap
• Check the TDC mark on the ywheel, line it up
precisely with the TDC mark if it does not match
up
• Turn the engine in the opposite direction to the
engine's running direction until it reaches 50°
before TDC
• Turn the engine in the engine's running direction
until it reaches 30° before TDC
Checking the valve lift
• Attach the Dial gauge [103] (1) with Dial gauge
holder [102] (2) on the cylinder head
• Place the measuring tip (3) of the Dial gauge [103]
(1) on the valve disc for the intake valve (4)
• Zero the Dial gauge [103] (1)
• Continue cranking the engine in the engine's
running direction until the dial gauge pointer stops
moving
In this position the correct valve lift must be 11.0 –
11.3 mm .
If the valve lift is out of tolerance ( 11.0 – 11.3 mm
), check the camshaft, transmission components of
the valve timing and timing gears and, if necessary,
t new parts.
Attaching the cylinder head cover
• Check the seal and, if necessary, t a new one
• Fit the cylinder head cover (1)
• Screw in and tighten the mounting bolts (2)
