As an aid to the user, an alphabetical glossary of definitions used in this manual has
been compiled that is considered to be beneficial to the user. These terms are written
in the context of this manual and may not be absolute.
7.5 Glossary Of Terms
TERM DEFINITION
Amplitude
The maximum absolute value reached by a voltage or current
waveform - in this context, EMG (see below).
Artefact
Something observed in a scientific investigation or
experiment that is not naturally present but occurs as a result
of the preparative or investigative procedure
Electro surgical Surgery performed with electrical devices.
The surgical use of high-frequency electric current for cutting
or destroying tissue (as in cauterization) - see Electrocautery.
Electrocautery The cauterization of tissue by means of directing a high-
frequency current through a local area of tissue.
Electrode A conductor through which electricity enters or leaves an
object, substance, or region.
EMG Electromyography (EMG), the electrical activity of muscles.
Monopolar pencil A form of Electro Surgical Unit (ESU) - see ‘Electro Surgical’.
Neurosurgery Surgery performed on the nervous system, particularly the
brain and spinal cord.
Radio Frequency
(RF)
Any frequency within the electromagnetic spectrum
associated with radio wave propagation.
Stimulating probe The probe used to stimulate nerve or tissue.
Surgeon profile The personal profile set up for each surgeon. This saves all of
the surgeons settings and preferences for quick access.
Unmyelinated nerve The unmyelinated nerve pertains to any of the nerve cells
without myelin sheath (a sheath involved in the rapid
conduction of action potential). Compared to myelinated
nerves, unmyelinated nerve cells are slower in conducting
impulses.
Waveform A curve showing the shape of a wave at a given time - in this
context used to illustrate the EMG signal.
