Management Options
The GFS-2 provides two management applications:
• Command Line Interface (CLI)
CLI commands are entered using the application command prompt. The CLI is an
inherent part of the switch’s embedded software and may be activated using either a
terminal emulator, through the serial port, or a Telnet application, through an IP
network. The CLI enables a user to configure and manage the currently connected
switch.
• SANman
SANman is installed on the control console. It provides a real-time graphical view
of each of the Fabrics in the network and the relationship of the elements within the
Fabrics. SANman provides extensive configuration, management, monitoring and
analysis functions at the network level.
The GFS-2 utilizes three methods of management:
• Console Management (Serial)
• Out-of-Band Management (Telnet, SANman)
• In-Band Management (Telnet, SANman)
Console Management Overview
To manage a switch using a console, connect the switch to a PC and use a
terminal emulation application, such as HyperTerminal, to control and manage
the switch.
In-Band Management Overview
Any communication within the switching Fabric that utilizes the GFS-2 native
routing is considered to be In-Band to the switch. Examples of this would be
Fibre Channel frames entering the switch through a FC port, tunneled data
coming through an IP Tunneling (BBW) port, or Gigabit Ethernet traffic
coming through an IP Translation (BBL) port.
NOTE. FC data tunneled through an IP Tunneling port is treated as if it entered
the switch through a standard E_Port connection.
